December 2014 Splinters from the Board

The Board discussed the draft 2015 operating budget proposed by the Finance Committee. The Finance Committee will make several changes and, at a special January 14 Board meeting, the Board will approve a budget to recommend for vote at the Congregational Meeting on January 25, 2015, 1:00 p.m.

The Design Extravaganza workshops were reviewed. All comments and suggestions from the site visits, the suggestion box, the Dream email, and the workshops and responses will be combined into a spreadsheet so that we can sort and refer to the ideas during the next steps. The Building Design Committee (BDC) made basic recommendations (e.g., the gym space will be used for a sanctuary; the old wing will not be demolished) after considering the congregation’s ideas as well as input from the architect. The Board accepted the recommendations. The BDC recommended that the location of some functional areas (e.g., the main entrance and social hall/kitchen) be further considered by focus groups to meet in January. The Board authorized a contract with Ken Jones of Studio [Intrigue] Architects. The Board approved a recommendation from the BDC for a structure and process for further discussion and decision-making. A Dream Implementation Team (executive team), consisting of Kay Lovell (President), Dan Dettweiler (President-Elect), Bob Swanson (Chair of the BDC), and Kathy McWilliams (minister’s designee) will have authority to implement Board priorities and decisions.

Five Dream Focus Groups, each with an appointed chair, will concentrate on more specific ideas for functional areas (worship space; RE space; office/administrative space; social hall/kitchen; exterior/outdoors). These focus groups are open to all congregants who want to be involved and will begin meeting after the January 14 Board meeting. If you are interested, send an email to dream.uucgl@gmail.com.

The Board approved setting up a task force to provide input on issues involved in selling the 855 Grove Street property. This will be discussed further in January. The Board will have special meetings on January 14 and February 11 to address building issues.
