Auction Coming - St. Patrick's Day

Dancing Irish Hat and ShoesThe annual church auction falls on St. Patrick's Day this year, March 17. Dust off your lucky shamrock and join us for a catered dinner for $12 per person. Dinner tickets, donation forms, and volunteer sign-up sheets are available at: http://www.sites.google.com/site/uucglauction/.

When we auction "services" instead of "things," we build community and have a lot of fun. What can you donate this year?

*   Host a "theme" meal like an Italian dinner, an ice cream social, a Texas-style barbeque, or a New Orleans jambalaya dinner. Pick a date and decide how many people you can host. Then pull out your cookbooks and let the fun begin!
  Host a "theme" movie night with a romantic comedy, western, science fiction, action flick, children's movie, or just one of your favorites. Decide how many people can come. Then think about how to make it even more fun. Are you going to serve space snacks for Star Wars? How about dressing like cowboys for Rio Bravo? Give out Groucho glasses for Duck Soup? You get the idea.
*   Cook or bake for someone else. Do you make a terrific pecan pie? How about homemade strawberry jam? Do people rave about your cheesecake? Do you bake bread? Well, auction it off! You don't need to bring your food to the auction. Once someone wins your donation, you decide on a mutually good time for you to deliver it to the winner.
*   Do you have a cottage or time-share? Maybe you can offer it for a week or a weekend.
*   Do you have a boat, canoe, or kayak? Can you offer a boat ride or kayak lesson?
*   How about pet-sitting?
*   Do you have a hobby you can teach? Knitting? Basket-making? Woodwork?  Shamrocks
*   Can you host a sing-along or a concert?
*   How about offering show shoveling, garage cleaning, leaf raking, or kitchen organizing?
*   Can you show someone how to do their taxes or organize their home office?
  Can you replace a light fixture? Can you fix a leaky faucet? Offer to teach someone else how to do this.
*   Can you weed a flowerbed? Or show someone how to lay out a garden?
*   Do you have a truck? You could offer to haul something.

So get involved and have some fun.  Donate or sign up to volunteer today!

Mark Morrison-Reed Speaking at Heartland Assembly

Our own Duffy Peet will be preaching the Saturday morning sermon at the Heartland District Assembly, followed by keynote speaker, Rev. Mark Morrison-Reed. Following the close of the Assembly on Saturday, Morrison-Reed will come to UUCGL to do a book reading and to preach Sunday morning.  All are welcome.

The book reading will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 31.  Grab dinner on your own, but join us for dessert and coffee.  What is it like to grow up an African-American UU? Why does UUism find becoming more diverse such a struggle? Hear Mark Morrison-Reed read excerpts from his books In Between: Memoir of an Integration Baby and Darkening the Doorways: Black Trailblazers and Missed Opportunities in Unitarian Universalism and a sneak preview of the soon-to-be-released meditation manual Voices from the Margins.

Sunday morning, as we introduce the April theme of Salvation, Rev. Morrison-Reed’s title is Dragged Kicking and Screaming into Heaven! Join us for worship at 9:15 and 11:15 a.m. on Sunday, April 1.

Get Connected at UUCGL

Want to know what activities our church offers? Looking for a place to get involved with church life? We invite you to participate in the new Get Connected at UUCGL survey! You can click here to take the survey online or fill it out at the Survey Table during coffee hour after Sunday morning worship. Even if you’ve taken a personal survey in the past, this will update our records and help us create the community we all desire!

UUCGL Named Honor Congregation

Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) President Reverend Peter Morales wrote to us recently, “Your congregation is among our 50 highest contributing Honor Congregations, those that will be recognized as our Leadership Congregations at the next General Assembly (GA). This level of generosity demonstrates a high level of commitment to our Associations’ mission and covenant of mutual support. Your congregation’s contributions help bring our principles and values to life in the wider world.”

These contributions are our annual UUA dues of $58 per member. This year, we will contribute $20,300 to the UUA. We also support the UU Heartland District with dues of $21 per member. This year, we will contribute $7,350 to the Heartland District. We can be proud of contributing our “fair share” in support of our national and district organizations. The GA delegates we just elected will wear special ribbons on their nametags because of this honor. Your continued generous support of this congregation through your annual operating pledges makes this possible. Thank you!
