JTW Film: Brother Outsider
Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin will be shown on Sunday, February 19 at 7:00 p.m. in the Assembly Hall. The story of Bayard Rustin – a man who was openly gay at a time when most gay men, particularly black men, remained in the closet – should be seen by everyone who cares about American history and civil rights. Born 100 years ago on March 17, 1912, Rustin fought tirelessly for the rights of oppressed people throughout the world: in India, South Africa, and Russia as well as in the United States. Influenced strongly by his maternal Quaker grandmother as well as by Gandhi, W.E.B. duBois, and James Weldon Johnson, Rustin devoted his life to working for justice. He is best known for organizing the 1963 March on Washington but was influential in securing many other rights and freedoms which we now take for granted.
Please join Journey toward Wholeness in viewing this Sundance award-winning documentary. We promise you an evening of delight, inspiration, and insight as you revisit the U.S. Civil Rights Movement from the 1920s through the 1980s.
