Sunday Services and Coffee Hour

UU_mosaicVisitors are welcome!

We gather every Sunday as a way of centering and empowering ourselves in community in order to sustain ourselves and transform the world.

We explore a different theme in worship each month with words and music. Services include prayer or meditation, candle-lighting, readings, and lots of singing. Children and youth join us at the beginning of worship for story and song and then leave to explore the theme of the month through various workshops in their classrooms. We hold "multigenerational" worship for the entire family from time to time, often for holidays. Worship here is a celebration of life!

There is a staffed nursery for the youngest among us. Parents can see and hear worship inside the nursery if they choose to stay. Religious exploration in workshops and classes takes place at both services: Preschool through sixth grade is served at 9:15 and kindergarten through high school at 11:15. During the summer months, the classes are combined, and children create a garden together. Worship and Religious Education is not theme-based in the summer, for a change of pace.

We are a Welcoming Congregation and invite everyone to visit and consider joining us. There is no "dress code," but the usual attire might be described as business casual.

Parking & Transportation

The Assembly Hall (where worship happens) is fully accessible via the main entrance on Grove Street. From the lot on Library Lane, you'll need to use the stairs to reach worship. American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation is provided at the 11:15 a.m. service when there are two services and at the 10:15 a.m. service when there is only one service.

After each service, there is coffee and conversation in the Fireplace Room adjacent to Assembly Hall. Newcomers can find information about activities and sign up for classes and groups at the Activities Table.

A Special Plate Collection will be taken for the Women’s Center of Greater Lansing, a private non-profit organization that has served more than 3,800 women since 2005 with one paid staff member, several volunteer interns from local universities, and no state or federal funding.

The Women’s Center is dedicated to helping women realize their potential, achieve economic self-sufficiency, and develop emotional and physical well-being. They do this by providing a safe place where women can support each other and access personal and career counseling, resume preparation, and a wide variety of support groups and workshops. All services are provided free of charge or on a sliding fee scale starting at $1. No one is turned away based on inability to pay for services.

The Special Plate Collections on February 26 and March 4 will provide much-needed monetary support for the programs and services offered and improve the quality of life for our local residents. We thank you in advance for your generosity and support.

Letting Go is the theme for March.

March 4: Befriending Endings when Entering Beginnings with Duffy Peet, Ministerial Intern

Coffee Hour

Join us after each worship service for coffee and conversation in the Fireplace Room. Visit the Activities Table to sign our Guest Book (for newcomers), request a name badge, or sign up for our current adult classes. (See the literature rack along the stairwell for information and registration forms for children and youth classes.)

At most coffee hours, volunteers sell packages of our Fair Trade coffee and other treats in the Fireplace Room, and the adjacent Grove Street Book Shop offers inexpensive used and new books, films, and music.

Do you love socializing while drinking coffee or tea after the service? Then this is the job for you: Coffee Service Setup and Cleanup Team! We’re looking for two individuals to help each week, one to set up before first service and one to clean up after second service. See the job descriptions at the Activities Table and next to the coffee, or sign up at http://signupgenius.com/go/coffee70.

Grove Street Book Shop

The Grove Street Book Shop has a limited selection of UU jewelry for sale! We have earrings, pendants, and pins. Stop by after Sunday service. You may find a gift for others or even yourself! The Book Shop sells donated hardcover books, paperbacks, CDs, and movies at very reasonable prices. Used book prices are 50 cents for paperbacks and 75 cents for hardcovers. GSBS is located off the Fireplace Room and is open most Sundays after service. A lockbox is also available for purchases at other hours. Donations are received frequently. Stop by often to see new arrivals!

Tina Griffin is the senior bookstore volunteer, on duty since 2000. Tina, a teacher, has been a voracious reader since childhood. She consistently encourages and nurtures a love of reading in her students. One of her most favorite books is The Secret Life of Bees, written by Sue Monk Kidd and published in 2003. Tina also enjoys reading fiction authors Janet Evanovich, Harlan Coben, and Sandra Dallas, among others. Do you enjoy movies adapted from novels? Tina highly recommends the film adaptions of The Secret Life of Bees (2008) and The Help (2011), both set in the American South. Tina gladly shares her current reading discoveries with Book Shop visitors, too. Many thanks go to her for strongly supporting our church Book Shop!

Fair Trade Coffee Sales

We can always use more volunteers to help run the table during Coffee Hour. To help with sales of fair trade coffee, chocolate, and olive oil, contact Linda Anderson.

Reserving a Table

Does your committee or activity need a table during coffee hour after services? The pillar near the windows has a clipboard with a page for each Sunday. Just sign up there! If all the tables are full for the Sunday you need, you’ll be able to see who else has tables so you can ask someone to share a table.
